The highest-flying bird is thought to be the BAR-HEADED GOOSE, it's been spotted at 30,000 ft. That's as high as commercial airplanes fly!
The FARTHEST-FLYING BIRD is the ARCTIC TERN. It flies 20,000 miles a year in its migration from the North Pole. Since it flies from one summer to another, it spends more time in the sun than any other creature on EARTH!
The FASTEST-FLYING BIRD is the CANVASBACK DUCK. Flapping its wings, it can reach horizontal speeds of 70 miles/hour. HOWEVER, the PEREGRINE FALCON can DIVE at 150 mph while hunting.
HUMMINGBIRDS beat their wings 75 times/second. The RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD migrates 500 miles from Texas across the Gulf of Mexico to the Yucatan peninsula. That's as much as 30 hours with no touchdown!
"FLYING" FISH have extended dorsal fins for "wings." To fly, they speed up in the water till they're going fast enough to take off. They can fly for as long as 15 seconds and travel 600 ft.
DRAGONFLIES are the most maneuverable fliers around. Their eyes have 30,000 lenses so they can see in ALL directions. They can fly 35 mph, hover and fly backwards. Prehistoric dragonflies had TWO-FOOT wing spans, the size of a seagull! Now the biggest is a South American dragonfly with a 71/2 inch wingspan.
The MALAYSIAN COLUGO or "flying lemur" can glide farther than any other mammal, because it has the largest flying membrane, which extends all the way to its tail. It can glide as far as 450 ft. and only lose 12 ft. in height.

PLANTS have successfully been grown in space, aboard Mir, the Russian space station.

FLYING PLANTS - The World's smallest flowering plant rides the winds of cyclonic storms. The entire plant body of this plant, the WOLFFIA, ahs been found in the water of melted hailstones.

Birds can't survive in outer space. They need gravity to swallow. The longest recorded flight of a chicken is 13 seconds.
