Peace
Pilgrim: An All Round Hero
Who:
Peace Pilgrim (she gave up her real name when she started walking)
Lived:
1908-1981
Famous
for: walking for peace from age 45 to 80
Religion:
"I'm a deeply religious person. I just don't follow one specific
religion."
What
she carried: Her motto: "I always wear everything I own!"
Why:
At first, Peace Pilgrim walked to support an end to the Korean
War. Later, she addressed the war in Vietnam. She believed that
peace was not just no wars
- it was
getting rid of the feelings that cause war, like hatred and fear.
So she walked to encourage people to give up their fears and feel
peaceful themselves.
"A pilgrim's
job is to make people think," said Peace.
How:
In the 35 years she was on the road, she never bought a single
thing. People offered her a place to stay and gave her food to
eat. The longest she ever went without food was three days - not
bad! When people asked her about her life on the road, she said:
"If you fear nothing and expect good, good comes."
Her
Message: "This is the way of peace -
overcome evil with good, and falsehood with truth, and hatred
with love."
