All 'round the world, people of all ages are joining the GREEN
MAP SYSTEM to change the way they look at their urban neighborhoods.
Instead of a grid of grey city blocks, like a regular map, a GREEN
MAP shows where to find good climbing trees, cloud watching sites,
earth-friendly businesses, and other GREEN places.
The GREEN MAP SYSTEM started in 1995 in NYC. Now, there are 166
Green Map Projects underway, in 36 countries, on all inhabited
continents. |

Some
fo the newest places to make Green Maps are:
Yogyakarta, Indonesia
Burlington, Vermont
Reykyavik, Iceland
Yellowknife, NY, Canada
Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe |

Green
Maps use icons (little pictures)
to show all the different things to look for. Icons can be read
by anyone, no matter what language they speak.
How many icons can you identify in the map below, of NYC's Lower
East Side? Use the list beside the map to tell you what each icon
means. |
